Root and Tuber Price in South Africa (FOB) - 2022

The average root and tuber export price stood at $293 per ton in 2022, dropping by -9.3% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the average export price increased by 35%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $379 per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($827 per ton), while the average price for exports to Mozambique ($166 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Zimbabwe (+5.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average root and tuber import price stood at $373 per ton in 2022, shrinking by -5.4% against the previous year. In general, the import price showed a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the average import price increased by 56% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $687 per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($529 per ton), while the price for Malawi ($48 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Namibia (+5.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.

Root and Tuber Exports in South Africa

In 2022, the amount of roots and tubers exported from South Africa was estimated at 200K tons, picking up by 1.8% against the year before. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the period from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 8.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, root and tuber exports shrank to $58M in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +5.5% over the period from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 30%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $63M, and then dropped in the following year.

Root and Tuber Imports in South Africa

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 73%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, root and tuber imports expanded significantly to $2.5M in 2022. In general, total imports indicated strong growth from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +15.9% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +55.7% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 28% against the previous year.
