Coconut Production in Papua New Guinea - 2022

After five years of growth, production of coconuts decreased by -0.9% to 1.8M tons in 2022. In general, production, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the production volume increased by 1.9% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak volume of 1.8M tons, leveling off in the following year. Coconut output in Papua New Guinea indicated a relatively flat trend pattern, which was largely conditioned by a relatively flat trend pattern of the harvested area and a modest expansion in yield figures.

In value terms, coconut production shrank notably to $874M in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, recorded a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 80% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $1.3B. From 2020 to 2022, production growth failed to regain momentum.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the harvested area increased by 0.3% against the previous year. The coconut harvested area peaked at 301K ha in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the harvested area failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, the average yield of coconuts in Papua New Guinea fell slightly to 6.3 tons per ha, approximately reflecting 2021 figures. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% from 2017 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the yield increased by 3%. The coconut yield peaked at 6.3 tons per ha in 2021, and then dropped slightly in the following year.
