In October 2023, the average import price for peat; (including peat litter), whether or not agglomerateds amounted to $131 per ton, shrinking by -2% against the previous month. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in April 2023 when the average import price increased by 17% month-to-month. The import price peaked at $169 per ton in December 2022; however, from January 2023 to October 2023, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Germany ($194 per ton), while the price for Lithuania ($74.0 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From October 2022 to October 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Estonia (+1.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average export price for peat; (including peat litter), whether or not agglomerateds stood at $201 per ton in 2022, reducing by -20.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, export price indicated a tangible increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 an increase of 45% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $255 per ton in 2021, and then contracted markedly in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Romania ($488 per ton), while the average price for exports to Hungary ($187 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Romania (+11.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

After two years of decline, supplies from abroad of peat; (including peat litter), whether or not agglomerateds increased by 27% to 176K tons in 2022. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the period from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, imports of peat; (including peat litter), whether or not agglomerateds surged to $26M in 2022. Overall, total imports indicated resilient growth from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +16.0% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +56.2% against 2019 indices. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
