Which Country Exports the Most Peat in the World?

In 2016, the amount of peat exported worldwide totaled 9.6M tonnes, picking up by 3% against the previous year level. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% from 2007 to 2016; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2011, when exports increased by 9% against the previous year level. Global peat export peaked in 2016, and are expected to retain its growth in the near future.

In value terms, peat exports amounted to $1.2B in 2016. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% over the period from 2007 to 2016; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Global peat export peaked of $1.3B in 2015, falling back in the following year.

Peat Exports By Country

Germany (2.1M tonnes), Latvia (1.5M tonnes), Canada (1.2M tonnes), the Netherlands (1M tonnes), Ireland (1M tonnes), Estonia (978K tonnes), and Lithuania (742K tonnes) represented roughly 88% of total exports of peat in 2016.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of peat exports, among the main exporting countries, was attained by Latvia (+4.8% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest peat markets worldwide were Canada ($344M), Germany ($199M) and Latvia ($162M), together comprising 57% of global exports.

Latvia (+7.8% per year) recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the peat exports, in terms of the main exporting countries, over the last 9 years, while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Peat Export Prices By Country

In 2016, the average export price for peat amounted to $130 per tonne, declining by -7.1% against the previous year. Overall, peat export price continues to indicate a mild growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2011, when export increased by 7% y-o-y. Global peat export peaked of $140 per tonne in 2015, falling back in the following year.

Export prices varied noticeably by country of destination. the country with the highest export prices was Canada ($297 per tonne), while Estonia ($73 per tonne) was among the lowest.
