In 2022, the average import price for onions, shallots, garlic, leeks and other alliaceous vegetables; fresh or chilleds amounted to $415 per ton, reducing by -10.2% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, posted a noticeable increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 an increase of 77% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $548 per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Indonesia ($1,770 per ton), while the price for New Zealand ($141 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Indonesia (+13.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

In January 2024, the average export price for onions, shallots, garlic, leeks and other alliaceous vegetables; fresh or chilleds amounted to $750 per ton, waning by -25.1% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in November 2023 an increase of 86% m-o-m. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $1,173 per ton. From December 2023 to January 2024, the the average export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In January 2024, the country with the highest price was Japan ($1,081 per ton), while the average price for exports to Vietnam ($505 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From January 2023 to January 2024, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Myanmar (+2.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports of Onions, Shallots, Garlic, Leeks and Other Alliaceous Vegetables; Fresh or Chilled in Thailand

In 2022, supplies from abroad of onions, shallots, garlic, leeks and other alliaceous vegetables; fresh or chilleds decreased by -7% to 104K tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. In general, imports showed a abrupt contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 22%. As a result, imports reached the peak of 187K tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports of remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, imports of onions, shallots, garlic, leeks and other alliaceous vegetables; fresh or chilleds declined sharply to $43M in 2022. Overall, imports faced a abrupt curtailment. The smallest decline of -0.8% was in 2020.
