The average export price for onions, shallots, garlic, leeks and other alliaceous vegetables; fresh or chilleds stood at $243 per ton in 2022, which is down by -10.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a slight decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 15% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $332 per ton. From 2019 to 2022, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Botswana ($590 per ton), while the average price for exports to Mozambique ($182 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Zambia (+5.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In December 2023, the country with the highest price was India ($4,046 per ton), while the price for Thailand ($199 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From December 2022 to December 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+5.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
