Price for Nutmeg, Mace and Cardamom in Ethiopia (FOB) - 2022
The average nutmeg, mace and cardamom export price stood at $3,752 per ton in 2022, which is down by -22.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the average export price increased by 84% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $6,971 per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($8,045 per ton), while the average price for exports to Kenya ($403 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the United Arab Emirates (+5.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average nutmeg, mace and cardamom import price stood at $815 per ton in 2022, dropping by -49.6% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the average import price increased by 52%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $2,518 per ton. From 2019 to 2022, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($2,892 per ton), while the price for Sri Lanka ($545 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Guatemala (+3.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
Exports of Nutmeg, Mace and Cardamom in Ethiopia
For the fourth consecutive year, Ethiopia recorded growth in shipments abroad of nutmeg, mace and cardamoms, which increased by 24% to 152 tons in 2022. Over the period under review, exports showed a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 57% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
In value terms, nutmeg, mace and cardamom exports dropped to $572K in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +8.3% over the period from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 35%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $609K. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
