Price for Natural Rubber and Gum in Sri Lanka (CIF) - 2022
The average natural rubber and gum import price stood at $1,579 per ton in 2022, rising by 14% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a noticeable descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the average import price increased by 28% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $2,691 per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the countries with the highest prices were Thailand ($1,636 per ton) and Malaysia ($1,571 per ton), while the price for Singapore ($1,408 per ton) and Vietnam ($1,462 per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Malaysia (-2.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.

In 2022, the average natural rubber and gum export price amounted to $1,549 per ton, dropping by -33.8% against the previous year. In general, the export price saw a deep slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the average export price increased by 113%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $3,914 per ton. From 2019 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($2,176 per ton), while the average price for exports to Malaysia ($1,294 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Brazil (+11.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.
Imports of Natural Rubber and Gum in Sri Lanka
In 2022, the amount of natural rubber and gums imported into Sri Lanka expanded modestly to 18K tons, rising by 2% against the year before. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +14.1% from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 42% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
In value terms, natural rubber and gum imports skyrocketed to $29M in 2022. In general, total imports indicated a significant increase from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +25.3% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +96.8% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 41% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

In 2022, shipments abroad of natural rubber and gums decreased by -84.3% to 1.1K tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Overall, exports recorded a abrupt decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 136% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of 7.3K tons, and then contracted remarkably in the following year.
In value terms, natural rubber and gum exports reduced markedly to $1.8M in 2022. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a precipitous setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 85%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $17M, and then reduced rapidly in the following year.
