Price for Mechanical Shovel and Excavator in South Africa (CIF) - 2022
In 2022, the average mechanical shovel and excavator import price amounted to $75,227 per unit, increasing by 99% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a slight curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the average import price increased by 121%. The import price peaked at $84,403 per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($183,384 per unit), while the price for Poland ($855 per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Turkey (+16.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average mechanical shovel and excavator export price stood at $173K per unit in July 2023, rising by 11% against the previous month. In general, export price indicated a modest increase from July 2022 to July 2023: its price increased at an average monthly rate of +1.3% over the last twelve-month period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on July 2023 figures, mechanical shovel and excavator export price increased by +4.6% against March 2023 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in December 2022 when the average export price increased by 76% m-o-m. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure in July 2023.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In July 2023, the country with the highest price was Botswana ($324K per unit), while the average price for exports to Democratic Republic of the Congo ($58,739 per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Botswana (+9.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Imports of Mechanical Shovel and Excavator in South Africa
In 2022, overseas purchases of mechanical shovels, excavators and shovel loaders decreased by -41.6% to 8K units, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. In general, imports showed a deep downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 69%. As a result, imports attained the peak of 18K units.
