Price for Lamb and Sheep Meat in Australia (FOB) - 2023

The average lamb and sheep meat export price stood at $4,898 per ton in August 2023, reducing by -10.1% against the previous month. Overall, the export price recorded a noticeable setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in May 2023 when the average export price increased by 3.1% m-o-m. The export price peaked at $7,170 per ton in August 2022; however, from September 2022 to August 2023, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In August 2023, the country with the highest price was the United States ($8,808 per ton), while the average price for exports to China ($3,444 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Papua New Guinea (+1.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Price for Lamb and Sheep Meat in Australia (CIF) - 2022

In 2022, the average lamb and sheep meat import price amounted to $5,563 per ton, jumping by 47% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a pronounced descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 50% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $8,685 per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($9,154 per ton), while the price for the United States ($5,347 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United Arab Emirates (+16.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.

Exports of Lamb and Sheep Meat in Australia

In 2022, lamb and sheep meat exports from Australia reached 459K tons, growing by 4.1% on the previous year. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a noticeable reduction.

In value terms, lamb and sheep meat exports expanded rapidly to $3.2B in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the period from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 20% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.
