Lamb and Sheep Meat Price in Australia Shrinks 2%, Averaging $7,115 per Ton

Australia Lamb and Sheep Meat Export Price in August 2022

In August 2022, the lamb and sheep meat price stood at $7,115 per ton (FOB, Australia), with a decrease of -1.6% against the previous month. Overall, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in June 2022 when the average export price increased by 3.9% against the previous month. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $7,693 per ton. From July 2022 to August 2022, the the average export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In August 2022, the country with the highest price was the United States ($10.4 per kg), while the average price for exports to Papua New Guinea ($2,676 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From January 2022 to August 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Taiwan (Chinese) (+4.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Australia Lamb and Sheep Meat Exports

Lamb and sheep meat exports from Australia totaled 41K tons in August 2022, surging by 14% on the month before. The total export volume increased at an average monthly rate of +5.2% from January 2022 to August 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain months. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in February 2022 with an increase of 20% m-o-m. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure in August 2022.

In value terms, lamb and sheep meat exports expanded rapidly to $290M (IndexBox estimates) in August 2022. The total export value increased at an average monthly rate of +4.6% from January 2022 to August 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in March 2022 with an increase of 21% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at 311K tons in June 2022; however, from July 2022 to August 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Australia Lamb and Sheep Meat Exports by Country

China (14K tons), the United States (8.4K tons) and South Korea (2.7K tons) were the main destinations of lamb and sheep meat exports from Australia, with a combined 61% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Papua New Guinea, the United Arab Emirates, Canada, Malaysia, Singapore, Japan, Saudi Arabia, Taiwan (Chinese) and the UK, which together accounted for a further 27%.

From January 2022 to August 2022, the biggest increases were in Canada (with a CAGR of +10.0%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for lamb and sheep meat exported from Australia were the United States ($88M), China ($66M) and South Korea ($25M), together accounting for 62% of total exports. These countries were followed by Canada, the United Arab Emirates, Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, Taiwan (Chinese), Saudi Arabia and the UK, which together accounted for a further 26%.

Singapore, with a CAGR of +13.4%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
