In 2022, the average import price for ginger, saffron, tumeric (curcuma), thyme, bay leaves, curry and other spiceses amounted to $2,581 per ton, increasing by 34% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the average import price increased by 40% against the previous year. The import price peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Syrian Arab Republic ($4,770 per ton), while the price for Nigeria ($1,947 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Turkey (+12.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

In November 2023, the average export price for ginger, saffron, tumeric (curcuma), thyme, bay leaves, curry and other spiceses amounted to $5,393 per ton, with an increase of 41% against the previous month. Over the last twelve months, it increased at an average monthly rate of +1.1%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Average prices varied noticeably for the major foreign markets. In November 2023, the highest price was recorded for prices to Libya ($6,280 per ton) and Saudi Arabia ($5,354 per ton), while the average price for exports to Turkey ($5,042 per ton) and Nigeria ($5,042 per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From November 2022 to November 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Libya (+4.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

For the third consecutive year, Egypt recorded decline in supplies from abroad of ginger, saffron, tumeric (curcuma), thyme, bay leaves, curry and other spiceses, which decreased by -39.2% to 5K tons in 2022. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a abrupt shrinkage. The smallest decline of -5.6% was in 2020.
In value terms, imports of ginger, saffron, tumeric (curcuma), thyme, bay leaves, curry and other spiceses shrank significantly to $13M in 2022. Overall, imports showed a pronounced slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 15%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $17M. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports of remained at a somewhat lower figure.

After three years of growth, overseas shipments of ginger, saffron, tumeric (curcuma), thyme, bay leaves, curry and other spiceses decreased by -21.7% to 2K tons in 2022. In general, total exports indicated strong growth from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +9.5% over the last three years.
