Price for Dog and Cat Food in Australia (CIF) - 2023
The average dog and cat food import price stood at $3,221 per ton in July 2023, reducing by -4.6% against the previous month. In general, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in August 2022 an increase of 17% month-to-month. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $3,542 per ton. From September 2022 to July 2023, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In July 2023, the country with the highest price was New Zealand ($8,183 per ton), while the price for Italy ($2,381 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Hungary (+3.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Price for Dog and Cat Food in Australia (FOB) - 2022
The average dog and cat food export price stood at $1,740 per ton in 2022, waning by -11.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 14% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $1,960 per ton in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was China ($6,438 per ton), while the average price for exports to the Philippines ($1,141 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to China (+15.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Imports of Dog and Cat Food in Australia
For the fourth year in a row, Australia recorded growth in overseas purchases of dog and cat food, which increased by 12% to 155K tons in 2022. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +9.6% over the period from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 15%. Imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In general, total imports indicated a strong expansion from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +17.2% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +61.2% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 26%. Imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
