Animal Food Price in the United States (FOB) - 2023

The average animal food export price stood at $1,346 per ton in August 2023, rising by 32% against the previous month. Over the period under review, export price indicated a modest expansion from August 2022 to August 2023: its price increased at an average monthly rate of +1.8% over the last twelve-month period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on August 2023 figures, animal food export price decreased by -29.9% against June 2023 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in May 2023 when the average export price increased by 34% m-o-m. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum at $1,918 per ton in June 2023; however, from July 2023 to August 2023, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was Mexico ($2,074 per ton), while the average price for exports to South Korea ($327 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Japan (+7.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Animal Food Price in the United States (CIF) - 2023

The average animal food import price stood at $1,520 per ton in August 2023, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous month. In general, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in October 2022 an increase of 13% against the previous month. The import price peaked at $1,765 per ton in May 2023; however, from June 2023 to August 2023, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In August 2023, the country with the highest price was France ($8,934 per ton), while the price for Malaysia ($872 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Italy (+12.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

Animal Food Exports in the United States

In 2022, shipments abroad of animal food (except dog and cat) decreased by -10.6% to 1.6M tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a slight descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when exports increased by 11% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of 1.9M tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, animal food exports expanded significantly to $2B in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +7.0% over the period from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain years. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Over the period under review, total imports indicated prominent growth from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +17.4% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +61.8% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 23%. Imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, animal food imports expanded remarkably to $1.1B in 2022. Overall, total imports indicated a strong expansion from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +17.2% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +60.8% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 36%. Imports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.
