Which Country Exports the Most Animal Feeding in the World?

In 2016, the amount of animal feed exported worldwide amounted to 23M tonnes, falling by -2.6% against the previous year figure. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the period from 2007 to 2016; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations over the period under review. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2010, an increase of 22% against the previous year level. Global animal feed export peaked of 24M tonnes in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2016, it failed to regain its strength.

In value terms, animal feed exports stood at $25B in 2016. Overall, it indicated a remarkable growth from 2007 to 2016: the total exports value increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. Based on the result of 2016, animal feed exports decreased by -6.1% against its level of 2014. Global animal feed export peaked of $27B in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2016, it stood at a somewhat lower level.

Animal Feed Exports By Country

In 2016, the Netherlands (3.5M tonnes), Germany (2.7M tonnes), Belgium (1.8M tonnes), and France (1.8M tonnes) represented the main exporters of animal feed in the world, comprising 43% of total export. It was distantly followed by China (1.1M tonnes), making up 5% share of total animal feed exports. The following exporters - Hungary (776K tonnes), Italy (768K tonnes), the U.S. (740K tonnes), Spain (738K tonnes), Thailand (703K tonnes), Argentina (685K tonnes), and the UK (669K tonnes) occupied near 22% of total exports, each.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of animal feed exports, among the main exporting countries, was attained by Italy (+14.4% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the U.S. ($2.8B), the Netherlands ($2.7B) and Germany ($2.5B) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2016, together accounting for 32% of global exports. These countries were followed by France, China, Belgium, the UK, Thailand, Spain, Italy, Hungary and Argentina, which together accounted for a further 41%.

Argentina (+13.6% per year) recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the animal feed exports, in terms of the main exporting countries, over the last 9 years, while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Animal Feed Export Prices By Country

The average animal feed export price stood at $1,113 per tonne in 2016, coming up by 6% against the previous year. Over the last nine years it increased at an average annual rate of +1.7%.The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2009, an increase of 12% y-o-y. Global animal feed export peaked of $1,199 per tonne in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2016, it failed to regain its strength.

Export prices varied noticeably by country of destination. the country with the highest export prices was the U.S. ($3,834 per tonne), while Argentina ($444 per tonne) was among the lowest.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of animal feed export prices was attained by the U.S. (+17.9% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
