Price for Cherry and Sour Cherry in Greece (FOB) - 2022

The average cherry and sour cherry export price stood at $2,059 per ton in 2022, falling by -5.5% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a slight downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the average export price increased by 17%. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $2,484 per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($3,266 per ton), while the average price for exports to Romania ($574 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Italy (-0.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

In 2022, the average cherry and sour cherry import price amounted to $2,804 per ton, falling by -25.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the average import price increased by 72% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $3,765 per ton in 2021, and then contracted rapidly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($8,804 per ton), while the price for North Macedonia ($875 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+12.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

Exports of Cherry and Sour Cherry in Greece

In 2022, shipments abroad of cherries and sour cherries decreased by -12.1% to 24K tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 45%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of 32K tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, cherry and sour cherry exports fell sharply to $49M in 2022. Overall, total exports indicated slight growth from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports decreased by -37.9% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 68%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $79M. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
