Which Country Eats the Most Cherries in the World?

Global cherry consumption amounted to 2,265 thousand tonnes in 2015, approximately equating the previous year level. Overall, the global cherry consumption indicated a pronounced growth from 2007 to 2015. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The total consumption volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.8%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2009, when the output figure increased by +19% from the previous year level. Over the period under review, the global cherry consumption reached its maximum volume in 2015, and is likely to continue its growth in the immediate term.

Global Cherries Consumption

In 2015, the countries with the highest consumption were Turkey (370 thousand tonnes), the United States (284 thousand tonnes), Iran (180 thousand tonnes), together mixed up 36% of total consumption. They were followed by Russia with a 7% of global consumption share and China with a 6% share.

From 2007 to 2015, the most notable growth rates of cherry consumption among the main consuming countries was attained by Turkey (+1.0% per year), while the other global leaders experienced mixed trends in the consumption figures.

Per capita cherry in Turkey was estimated at 4.70 kg/year, much higher than the global average of 0.55 kg/year. Turkey was the leading country in terms of per capita consumption, among the main consumers of cherry, followed by Iran (2.28 kg/year), Russia (1.08 kg/year), the United States (0.88 kg/year) and China (0.09 kg/year).

In China, per capita cherry consumption has grown noticably (+23.5% per year) in recent years. In 2015, China per capita consumption reached 4.70 kg/year as compared with 0.02 kg/year in 2007.
