Price for Alumina and Primary Aluminum in the United States (CIF) - 2023
In August 2023, the average alumina and primary aluminum import price amounted to $2,213 per ton, standing approximately at the previous month. In general, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in September 2022 an increase of 26% against the previous month. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $2,783 per ton. From October 2022 to August 2023, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In August 2023, the country with the highest price was Argentina ($2,816 per ton), while the price for Brazil ($361 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Australia (+8.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.

The average alumina and primary aluminum export price stood at $2,644 per ton in August 2023, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous month. In general, the export price, however, saw a noticeable curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in December 2022 an increase of 18% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $3,511 per ton in August 2022; however, from September 2022 to August 2023, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was Germany ($4,733 per ton), while the average price for exports to Malaysia ($1,412 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Mexico (-1.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.
Imports of Alumina and Primary Aluminum in the United States
