In 2022, production of pre-coated aggregates decreased by -1% to 239M tons for the first time since 2011, thus ending a ten-year rising trend. Overall, production, however, continues to indicate a resilient increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 142% against the previous year. Global production peaked at 242M tons in 2021, and then dropped slightly in the following year.

In value terms, pre-coated aggregates production fell modestly to $27.4B in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, posted a noticeable expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 490% against the previous year. Global production peaked at $99.6B in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Production By Country

The United States (136M tons) remains the largest pre-coated aggregates producing country worldwide, accounting for 57% of total volume. Moreover, pre-coated aggregates production in the United States exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Russia (66M tons), twofold. Germany (19M tons) ranked third in terms of total production with a 7.8% share.

Imports

World Imports of Pre-Coated Aggregates

In 2022, supplies from abroad of pre-coated aggregates decreased by -9% to 519K tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. In general, imports showed a pronounced descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when imports increased by 23%. Global imports peaked at 763K tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, pre-coated aggregates imports reduced to $35M in 2022. Overall, imports recorded a pronounced descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 21%. Over the period under review, global imports attained the maximum at $56M in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports By Country

In 2022, Switzerland (191K tons), France (169K tons) and Ireland (122K tons) represented the major importer of pre-coated aggregates in the world, achieving 93% of total import. Albania (21K tons) took a little share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Albania (with a CAGR of +3.6%), while imports for the other global leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

In value terms, Switzerland ($12M), France ($10M) and Ireland ($9.2M) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together accounting for 91% of global imports.

Import Prices By Country

The average pre-coated aggregates import price stood at $67 per ton in 2022, dropping by -1.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 20% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum at $80 per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Ireland ($76 per ton), while Albania ($38 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ireland (+3.9%), while the other global leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.

Exports

World Exports of Pre-Coated Aggregates

In 2022, approx. 471K tons of pre-coated aggregates were exported worldwide; declining by -30.2% compared with the year before. Over the period under review, exports showed a deep slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when exports increased by 18% against the previous year. The global exports peaked at 870K tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, pre-coated aggregates exports fell to $35M in 2022. In general, exports saw a noticeable downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 11%. The global exports peaked at $57M in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports By Country

The shipments of the three major exporters of pre-coated aggregates, namely Belgium, Germany and the UK, represented more than two-thirds of total export. Austria (67K tons) took the next position in the ranking, distantly followed by Switzerland (31K tons). All these countries together took near 21% share of total exports. France (17K tons) took a relatively small share of total exports.

In value terms, Belgium ($9.1M), the UK ($7.3M) and Germany ($7.1M) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, with a combined 68% share of global exports. Austria, France and Switzerland lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 23%.

Among the main exporting countries, France, with a CAGR of +7.5%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices By Country

The average pre-coated aggregates export price stood at $73 per ton in 2022, jumping by 29% against the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum at $79 per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Austria ($95 per ton), while Switzerland ($7.7 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the UK (+5.3%), while the other global leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.
