In 2016, the global exports of gravel totaled 231M tonnes, coming up by 7% against the previous year level. In general, gravel exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2011, when exports increased by 14% against the previous year level. Over the period under review, global gravel exports reached its maximum volume in 2016, and are expected to retain its growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, gravel exports stood at $2.7B in 2016. Overall, gravel exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. In that year, global gravel exports attained its maximum level of $3.1B. From 2009 to 2016, growth of global gravel exports stood at a somewhat lower level.

Gravel Exports By Country

In 2016, United Arab Emirates (53M tonnes), distantly followed by China (32M tonnes), Norway (24M tonnes), Ukraine (13M tonnes), Germany (13M tonnes), Belgium (12M tonnes), Mexico (12M tonnes), and Indonesia (12M tonnes) represented the largest exporters of gravel, together achieving 73% of total exports. France (7.2M tonnes), Canada (7M tonnes), the UK (6.7M tonnes), and Malaysia (4.7M tonnes) followed a long way behind this figure.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of gravel exports, among the main exporting countries, was attained by Indonesia (+22.6% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, United Arab Emirates ($506M) remains the largest gravel supplier in the world, making up 19% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by Norway ($216M), with the share of 8% of global exports. It was followed by Germany, with the share of 8%.

From 2007 to 2016, the average annual growth rate of value of gravel exports in United Arab Emirates stood at +2.8%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Norway (+1.2% per year) and Germany (-3.8% per year).

Gravel Export Prices By Country

The average gravel export price stood at $12 per tonne in 2016, dropping by -14.3% against the previous year. In general, gravel export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2008, when it surged by 33% year-to-year. In that year, average gravel export price attained its maximum level of $16 per tonne. From 2009 to 2016, growth of average gravel export price stood at a somewhat lower level.

There were significant differences in the average export prices amongst major exporting countries. In 2016, the country with the highest export prices was Germany ($17 per tonne), while Ukraine ($4 per tonne) was among the lowest.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of gravel export prices was attained by Malaysia (+5.2% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
