Platinum Price in the United States (CIF) - 2023

In August 2023, the average platinum import price amounted to $30.8M per ton, with a decrease of -2.2% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in November 2022 an increase of 9.4% month-to-month. The import price peaked at $34.9M per ton in January 2023; afterwards, it flattened through to August 2023.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In August 2023, the highest price was recorded for prices from Costa Rica ($41.9M per ton) and Germany ($33.9M per ton), while the price for Switzerland ($28.5M per ton) and South Korea ($29.6M per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belgium (+0.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.

Platinum Price in the United States (FOB) - 2023

In August 2023, the average platinum export price amounted to $46.7M per ton, growing by 22% against the previous month. Over the period from August 2022 to August 2023, it increased at an average monthly rate of +3.0%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in October 2022 when the average export price increased by 48% month-to-month. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure at $54.0M per ton in January 2023; however, from February 2023 to August 2023, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was Japan ($291M per ton), while the average price for exports to the UK ($32.0M per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Japan (+19.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Platinum Imports in the United States

After three years of growth, overseas purchases of platinum decreased by -4.4% to 64 tons in 2022. Overall, total imports indicated a remarkable increase from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +16.2% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +56.8% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 54% against the previous year.

In value terms, platinum imports reduced to $2.2B in 2022. In general, total imports indicated a significant expansion from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +21.7% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +80.4% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 62% against the previous year.

Platinum Exports in the United States

In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in shipments abroad of platinum, when their volume decreased by -14.5% to 38 tons. Over the period under review, total exports indicated prominent growth from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +19.8% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 91%.

In value terms, platinum exports fell to $1.4B in 2022. In general, exports, however, posted a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 90% against the previous year.
