Phenols Price in China (CIF) - 2022
In 2022, the average phenols import price amounted to $2,383 per ton, growing by 3.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import price indicated noticeable growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, phenols import price increased by +84.5% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 78% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Israel ($6,070 per ton), while the price for Saudi Arabia ($1,306 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United States (+8.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Phenols Price in China (FOB) - 2022
The average phenols export price stood at $4,055 per ton in 2022, with an increase of 38% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the average export price increased by 49%. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $4,625 per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($10,164 per ton), while the average price for exports to Malaysia ($2,247 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to South Korea (+7.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Phenols Imports in China
In 2022, overseas purchases of phenols decreased by -13.2% to 1.1M tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a pronounced decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 19%. As a result, imports reached the peak of 1.5M tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, phenols imports fell to $2.6B in 2022. In general, total imports indicated resilient growth from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +11.3% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +38.0% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 49% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $2.9B, and then fell in the following year.

Phenols Exports in China
In 2022, overseas shipments of phenols decreased by -32.3% to 177K tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. In general, exports, however, enjoyed a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 114%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of 262K tons, and then dropped notably in the following year.
In value terms, phenols exports contracted to $719M in 2022. Overall, total exports indicated a resilient increase from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +11.7% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +39.5% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 40%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $772M, and then fell in the following year.
