Peat Price in South Africa (CIF) - 2023

In September 2023, the average peat import price amounted to $172 per ton, with a decrease of -12.8% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in May 2023 when the average import price increased by 95% against the previous month. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $300 per ton. From June 2023 to September 2023, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Latvia ($298 per ton), while the price for Ireland ($82.0 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+3.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

Peat Price in South Africa (FOB) - 2022

In 2021, the average peat export price amounted to $532 per ton, with a decrease of -10.1% against the previous year. In general, the export price saw a abrupt downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 30% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $1,831 per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied somewhat for the major foreign markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the countries with the highest prices were Botswana ($698 per ton) and Mozambique ($680 per ton), while the average price for exports to Zimbabwe ($487 per ton) and Lesotho ($547 per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Zimbabwe (+8.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Peat Imports in South Africa

In 2022, approx. 53K tons of peat were imported into South Africa; shrinking by -42.8% against the year before. In general, imports recorded a slight downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 76% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of 92K tons, and then contracted rapidly in the following year.

In value terms, peat imports fell markedly to $9M in 2022. Over the period under review, total imports indicated mild growth from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +18.5% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 84% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $14M, and then declined significantly in the following year.

Peat Exports in South Africa

In 2022, the amount of peat exported from South Africa contracted sharply to 1.7K tons, dropping by -40.7% on the year before. In general, exports, however, saw a temperate expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 316%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of 2.9K tons, and then dropped sharply in the following year.

In value terms, peat exports reduced dramatically to $720K in 2022. Overall, exports, however, recorded pronounced growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 274% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $1.5M, and then reduced sharply in the following year.
