South African Peat Prices See 63% Increase—Averaging $256/Ton Over Two Months
South Africa Peat Import Price in December 2022
In December 2022, the peat price amounted to $256 per ton (CIF, South Africa), increasing by 63% against the previous month. Overall, import price indicated a prominent increase from December 2021 to December 2022: its price increased at an average monthly rate of +5.5% over the last twelve months. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on December 2022 figures, peat import price increased by +98.8% against October 2022 indices. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In December 2022, the country with the highest price was Latvia ($245 per ton), while the price for Ireland ($70.0 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From December 2021 to December 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Lithuania (+2.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

South Africa Peat Imports
In December 2022, after two months of decline, there was significant growth in supplies from abroad of peat, when their volume increased by 48% to 3.2K tons. Overall, imports, however, recorded a noticeable decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in May 2022 when imports increased by 83% m-o-m.
In value terms, peat imports soared to $824K (IndexBox estimates) in December 2022. In general, imports continue to indicate modest growth.
South Africa Peat Imports by Country
Lithuania (925 tons), the Netherlands (913 tons) and Ireland (795 tons) were the main suppliers of peat imports to South Africa, together comprising 82% of total imports.
From December 2021 to December 2022, the biggest increases were in Lithuania (with a CAGR of +7.7%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.
In value terms, the largest peat suppliers to South Africa were Lithuania ($209K), the Netherlands ($167K) and Latvia ($127K), with a combined 61% share of total imports.
In terms of the main suppliers, Lithuania, with a CAGR of +10.1%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.
