Pasta and Couscous Price in the Netherlands (CIF) - 2023
In May 2023, the average pasta and couscous import price amounted to $3,435 per ton, waning by -4.7% against the previous month. In general, the import price, however, recorded a modest expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in April 2023 an increase of 6.3% month-to-month. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $3,605 per ton, and then shrank slightly in the following month.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In May 2023, the country with the highest price was South Korea ($4,320 per ton), while the price for China ($2,189 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From May 2022 to May 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Italy (+3.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Pasta and Couscous Price in the Netherlands (FOB) - 2023
The average pasta and couscous export price stood at $4,169 per ton in May 2023, growing by 1.8% against the previous month. In general, the export price saw a slight increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in November 2022 an increase of 9.7% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs in May 2023.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In May 2023, the country with the highest price was Norway ($6,284 per ton), while the average price for exports to Brazil ($3,853 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From May 2022 to May 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the United States (+7.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Pasta and Couscous Imports in the Netherlands
For the fourth consecutive year, the Netherlands recorded growth in purchases abroad of stuffed pasta and couscous, which increased by 2.7% to 113K tons in 2022. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +11.6% over the period from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 27%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
In value terms, pasta and couscous imports expanded sharply to $359M in 2022. In general, total imports indicated a remarkable increase from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +17.3% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +61.3% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 35%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

Pasta and Couscous Exports in the Netherlands
In 2022, shipments abroad of stuffed pasta and couscous decreased by -13.1% to 77K tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Overall, total exports indicated a resilient expansion from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +10.5% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +34.9% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 38%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of 89K tons, and then fell in the following year.
In value terms, pasta and couscous exports rose slightly to $289M in 2022. In general, total exports indicated a buoyant increase from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +14.4% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +49.6% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 30%. The exports peaked in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.
