Palm methyl ester (PME) is a type of biodiesel that is derived from palm oil, which is obtained from the fruit of the oil palm tree. PME is a renewable, environmentally friendly fuel that is gaining popularity as a substitute for fossil fuels such as diesel and petrol.
PME is a clear, yellow liquid with a boiling point of approximately 320 degrees Celsius. It is similar to conventional diesel fuel in terms of its physical properties, but it has several advantages over diesel fuel. For example, PME is biodegradable, non-toxic, and produces less harmful emissions than diesel fuel. It is also a renewable fuel source, as the oil palm tree can be re-planted and harvested multiple times.
PME is produced through a process known as transesterification, which involves mixing palm oil with a catalyst such as sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide. This causes the oil to react with alcohol, usually methanol, to produce PME and glycerol. The PME is then purified and separated from the glycerol using a centrifuge.
PME can be used in any diesel engine without the need for modifications to the engine or fuel system. It can be blended with diesel fuel in any proportion, and blends of up to 20% PME (known as B20) are commonly used in Europe and Asia. In addition, PME can be used as a pure fuel in specially adapted diesel engines, or in blends of up to 100% with small modifications to the engine or fuel system.
The use of PME has several benefits for the environment and for society as a whole. It is a renewable fuel source that can reduce our dependence on fossil fuels and decrease the emission of greenhouse gases. It can also create jobs and economic opportunities in the agricultural sector, particularly in rural areas where the oil palm tree is grown.
However, there are also some concerns associated with the production and use of PME. One major concern is the environmental impact of palm oil production, particularly in areas where rainforests are being cleared to make way for oil palm plantations. This can lead to deforestation, loss of biodiversity, and other environmental problems. In addition, some studies have suggested that the use of PME can lead to an increase in emissions of certain pollutants, such as nitrogen oxides (NOx), which can have negative impacts on air quality and human health.

Discover the top import markets for biodiesel and how these countries are driving the growth of the industry. Learn why the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Germany, and Spain are leading the way in biodiesel imports.
This year, Belgium is overtaking Germany to emerge as the second-largest biodiesel exporter in the world. From January to July 2021, Belgium supplied biodiesel worth $2.1B abroad, while Germany’s exports were estimated at $1.8B. The Netherlands keeps the leading position with a biodiesel export value of $4.2B. In 2020, Germany ($2.3B) followed the Netherlands ($4.6B) in global export ranking, while Belgium ($1.5B) took third place. The average biodiesel export price grew by +11% y-o-y to $979 per ton in 2020.
Neither the pandemic nor the low oil prices succeeded in slowing the growth of the global biodiesel market. As economies worldwide start to recover from the Covid crisis, and environmental concerns increase, the demand is set to remain robust in 2021.
