Onion and Shallot Price in Thailand (CIF) - 2022
The average onion and shallot import price stood at $365 per ton in 2022, dropping by -9.4% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, posted a moderate expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the average import price increased by 89%. The import price peaked at $403 per ton in 2021, and then fell in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Indonesia ($1,797 per ton), while the price for the Netherlands ($156 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Indonesia (+13.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Onion and Shallot Price in Thailand (FOB) - 2023
The average onion and shallot export price stood at $685 per ton in September 2023, declining by -40.9% against the previous month. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a perceptible increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in November 2022 when the average export price increased by 142% month-to-month. The export price peaked at $1,159 per ton in August 2023, and then dropped notably in the following month.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In September 2023, the country with the highest price was Japan ($4,034 per ton), while the average price for exports to Malaysia ($215 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Vietnam (+2.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Onion and Shallot Imports in Thailand
In 2022, the amount of onion and shallot imported into Thailand expanded to 64K tons, picking up by 2.1% on the previous year. Over the period under review, imports, however, faced a abrupt descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 6.8%. As a result, imports reached the peak of 107K tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, onion and shallot imports declined to $23M in 2022. In general, imports, however, showed a deep setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 0.6% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $34M. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Onion and Shallot Exports in Thailand
In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas shipments of onion and shallot, when their volume decreased by -9.8% to 20K tons. Over the period under review, total exports indicated resilient growth from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +14.5% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +50.1% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 41%.
In value terms, onion and shallot exports shrank dramatically to $13M in 2022. Overall, total exports indicated a remarkable increase from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +8.2% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 54% against the previous year.
