The average mullite import price stood at $634 per ton in September 2023, jumping by 59% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a noticeable shrinkage. The import price peaked at $869 per ton in September 2022; however, from October 2022 to September 2023, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Japan ($1,061 per ton), while the price for China ($319 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Japan (+0.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
Mullite Imports in Thailand
In 2022, supplies from abroad of mullites decreased by -7.9% to 2.6K tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed a significant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 65% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of 2.8K tons, and then declined in the following year.
In value terms, mullite imports expanded remarkably to $1.6M in 2022. In general, total imports indicated a prominent increase from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +14.2% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +81.6% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 72% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.
