Meat Price in China (CIF) - 2022

The average meat import price stood at $4,941 per ton in 2022, increasing by 26% against the previous year. Overall, import price indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +7.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, meat import price increased by +73.6% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 26% against the previous year. The import price peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Australia ($7,175 per ton), while the price for Canada ($2,178 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United States (+14.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

Meat Price in China (FOB) - 2022

The average meat export price stood at $5,989 per ton in 2022, waning by -11.3% against the previous year. Overall, export price indicated tangible growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, meat export price decreased by -17.9% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the average export price increased by 31%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $7,299 per ton. From 2021 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Macao SAR ($6,327 per ton), while the average price for exports to Germany ($4,061 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the United States (+5.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Meat Imports in China

In 2022, supplies from abroad of meat decreased by -24.2% to 4.8M tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. In general, total imports indicated a prominent increase from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.5% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -29.5% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 67%. As a result, imports attained the peak of 6.8M tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, meat imports dropped modestly to $23.7B in 2022. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a resilient increase from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +17.4% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 63%.

Meat Exports in China

In 2022, the amount of meat exported from China surged to 37K tons, growing by 30% on the year before. In general, exports, however, recorded a slight reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 39%.

In value terms, meat exports totaled $220M in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 28% against the previous year. The exports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
