Maize silage making is a common practice in the agriculture industry, particularly in areas where maize (also known as corn) is a prevalent crop. Maize silage refers to the process of preserving and storing maize plants or its parts, such as stalks and leaves, to be used as animal feed during periods of limited forage availability.
To make maize silage, the crop is typically harvested when the plant reaches the desired maturity stage. This is usually when the kernels have reached the milk or soft dough stage, which ensures optimal nutrient content. Harvesting can be done using a forage harvester equipped with a special maize header that chops the entire plant into small pieces.
Once harvested, the chopped maize plants are immediately transported to the silage pit or bunker for ensiling. The silage pit is a large structure that is carefully prepared to create the ideal conditions for fermentation and storage. It is often lined with plastic or concrete walls to prevent spoilage and seepage of nutrients.
The chopped maize is then compacted and densely packed into the silage pit using large tractors or compactors to remove any air pockets and promote anaerobic fermentation. It is important to achieve a high level of compaction to minimize oxygen content, as anaerobic conditions are essential for efficient fermentation and preservation.
After compaction, the maize silage is covered with plastic sheets or an oxygen barrier film to create an airtight seal and protect it from environmental factors such as rain and air exposure. This ensures the maintenance of valuable nutrients and prevents the growth of mold and spoilage organisms that require oxygen.
Once the maize silage is sealed, it undergoes fermentation, which is initiated by naturally occurring lactic acid bacteria present on the plant material. These bacteria rapidly convert sugars in the maize into lactic acid, lowering the pH and creating an acidic environment.
Fermentation typically takes several weeks to months, depending on various factors such as moisture content, compaction, and ambient temperature. During this period, the lactic acid production inhibits the growth of harmful bacteria and preserves the nutritional quality of the maize silage.
Once the fermentation process is complete, the maize silage can be fed to livestock, especially dairy cows, beef cattle, and sheep. It is highly nutritious, providing energy, proteins, and fiber. Maize silage is commonly used as a primary component in livestock diets, and its availability during the offseason helps to maintain optimal animal health and productivity.
In conclusion, maize silage making involves harvesting maize at the right maturity stage, compacting it into a silage pit, sealing it to create anaerobic conditions, and allowing it to ferment. This process preserves the nutritional value of maize for use as animal feed during periods of limited forage availability.

This report provides an in-depth analysis of the global grain market.
The global maize market contracted to $404.6B in 2021, declining by -6.1% against the previous year.
The global maize market is expected to reach a production volume of more than 1.2 billion metric tons by the end of 2025.
In 2022, corn prices are projected to drop by approximately 10% y/y due to an expected all-time record high global production, which is to reach 1.2B tons. This forecast is subject to a number of risks, such as volatile fertilizer and energy prices, high freight rates, biofuel policies and weather conditions.
Driven by rising demand from the food industry and favourable weather, global corn production increased significantly in 2020. The rise in prices made the raw corn-based production of bioethanol unprofitable amid the low cost of traditional fuels due to the pandemic, resulting in the closure of some distilleries. In the future, the growing demand for alternative fuels is expected to offset this shift and promote the corn market.
