Lentil Price in the United States (FOB) - 2023

In August 2023, the average lentil export price amounted to $987 per ton, surging by 4.4% against the previous month. In general, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in December 2022 when the average export price increased by 11% month-to-month. The export price peaked at $994 per ton in May 2023; however, from June 2023 to August 2023, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat for the major export markets. In August 2023, the countries with the highest prices were Peru ($1,171 per ton) and Chile ($1,128 per ton), while the average price for exports to Ecuador ($882 per ton) and Canada ($896 per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to China (+2.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Lentil Price in the United States (CIF) - 2023

In August 2023, the average lentil import price amounted to $756 per ton, rising by 6.7% against the previous month. In general, the import price, however, showed a pronounced contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in May 2023 an increase of 8.9% month-to-month. The import price peaked at $990 per ton in August 2022; however, from September 2022 to August 2023, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In August 2023, the country with the highest price was India ($1,114 per ton), while the price for Canada stood at $738 per ton.

From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by India (-1.5%).

Lentil Exports in the United States

In 2022, shipments abroad of lentils decreased by -15.4% to 170K tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. Over the period under review, exports faced a abrupt slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 25% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of 329K tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, lentil exports surged to $160M in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +8.0% from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when exports increased by 42% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $180M. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Lentil Imports in the United States

Lentil imports into the United States surged to 86K tons in 2022, jumping by 17% compared with the previous year's figure. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.8% over the period from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, lentil imports surged to $86M in 2022. Overall, imports continue to indicate a significant increase. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
