Pulses Price in America Peaks at $996 per Ton
U.S. Pulses Export Price per Ton July 2022
In July 2022, the pulses price per ton amounted to $996, surging by 2.2% against the previous month. In general, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in February 2022 when the average export price increased by 7.6% month-to-month. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $1,087 per ton in March 2022; however, from April 2022 to July 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was Italy ($1,174 per ton), while the average price for exports to China ($542 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to July 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Ethiopia (+10.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
U.S. Pulses Export Prices by Type
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major types of exported product. In July 2022, the product with the highest price was beans (dry) ($1,147 per ton), while the average price for exports of pulses, nes ($671 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to July 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for the following types: chick peas (+2.0%), while the prices for the other products experienced mixed trend patterns.
U.S. Pulses Exports
In July 2022, overseas shipments of pulses decreased by -22.7% to 59K tons, falling for the second month in a row after three months of growth. In general, total exports indicated a measured increase from January 2022 to July 2022: its volume increased at an average monthly rate of +2.9% over the last six months. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on July 2022 figures, exports decreased by -31.9% against May 2022 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in March 2022 when exports increased by 26% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at 86K tons in May 2022; however, from June 2022 to July 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, pulses exports contracted notably to $58M (IndexBox estimates) in July 2022. Over the period under review, total exports indicated temperate growth from January 2022 to July 2022: its value increased at an average monthly rate of +2.8% over the last six-month period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on July 2022 figures, exports decreased by -33.0% against May 2022 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in March 2022 with an increase of 27% against the previous month. The exports peaked at $87M in May 2022; however, from June 2022 to July 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
U.S. Pulses Exports by Type
Beans (dry) (25K tons), peas (dry) (18K tons) and lentils (9.7K tons) were the main products of pulses exports from the United States, with a combined 90% share of total exports. Chick peas and pulses, nes lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 9.6%.
From January 2022 to July 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the major product types, was attained by pulses, nes (with a CAGR of +22.7%), while the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, beans (dry) ($29M), peas (dry) ($15M) and lentils ($9.1M) constituted the most exported types of pulses from the United States worldwide, with a combined 91% share of total exports. These products were followed by chick peas and pulses, nes, which together accounted for a further 9.4%.
Among the main product categories, pulses, nes, with a CAGR of +19.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.
U.S. Pulses Exports by Country
Mexico (8.7K tons), Canada (8.3K tons) and Ethiopia (5.7K tons) were the main destinations of pulses exports from the United States, together comprising 39% of total exports. The Dominican Republic, Spain, Italy, Yemen, China, the UK, the United Arab Emirates, Peru, the Philippines and Cameroon lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 39%.
From January 2022 to July 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by the United Arab Emirates (with a CAGR of +39.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Mexico ($9.9M), Canada ($7.5M) and the Dominican Republic ($5.1M) were the largest markets for pulses exported from the United States worldwide, together accounting for 38% of total exports. Ethiopia, Italy, Spain, Yemen, the United Arab Emirates, the UK, Peru, Cameroon, China and the Philippines lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 35%.
Among the main countries of destination, the United Arab Emirates, with a CAGR of +36.4%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
