Leek Price in South Africa (FOB) - 2022

In 2022, the average leek export price amounted to $1,830 per ton, approximately equating the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, enjoyed buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 83%. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum at $1,836 per ton in 2021, and then reduced slightly in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($8,460 per ton), while the average price for exports to Swaziland ($382 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Netherlands (+20.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Leek Price in South Africa (CIF) - 2022

The average leek import price stood at $2,151 per ton in 2022, picking up by 58% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a pronounced curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 426% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $3,066 per ton. From 2020 to 2022, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($4,787 per ton), while the price for Swaziland ($500 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+111.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

Leek Exports in South Africa

For the third consecutive year, South Africa recorded decline in overseas shipments of leeks and other alliaceous vegetables, which decreased by -3.7% to 321 tons in 2022. Over the period under review, exports saw a abrupt setback. The smallest decline of -0.7% was in 2021.

In value terms, leek exports reduced modestly to $587K in 2022. In general, exports continue to indicate a abrupt descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 30% against the previous year.

In general, imports saw a sharp decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 11%. As a result, imports reached the peak of 8.6 tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, leek imports rose remarkably to $2.4K in 2022. Over the period under review, imports faced a sharp shrinkage.
