Hydrogen SMR, which stands for hydrogen steam methane reforming, is a widely used and well-established technology for producing hydrogen from natural gas. It is a key process in the production of hydrogen, which is an important energy carrier with diverse applications.
Steam methane reforming involves the reaction of natural gas (methane) with steam, typically at high temperatures and in the presence of a catalyst. The reaction produces a mixture of hydrogen, carbon monoxide, and some carbon dioxide. The resulting gas mixture is known as synthesis gas or syngas, which is then further processed to obtain high-purity hydrogen.
This process is typically carried out in a reformer unit, which consists of several interconnected reactors. The first reactor is called the primary reformer, where the methane reacts with steam to produce syngas. The primary reforming reaction is endothermic, meaning it requires heat input to drive the reaction. This heat is typically provided by burning a portion of the natural gas feed in the reformer furnace, which generates high-temperature flue gases. The flue gases are then used to supply heat to the reformer tubes, where the endothermic reforming reaction takes place.
After the primary reformer, the syngas undergoes several purification steps to remove impurities such as sulfur compounds and carbon dioxide. These impurities can have detrimental effects on downstream processes and the quality of the hydrogen product.
Once purified, the syngas is further processed in a secondary reformer or shift converter to increase the hydrogen content and decrease the carbon monoxide content. This step involves the water-gas shift reaction, which converts carbon monoxide into additional hydrogen and carbon dioxide.
Finally, the hydrogen-rich gas is further purified using various technologies such as pressure swing adsorption or membrane separation to obtain high-purity hydrogen, typically with a purity exceeding 99%.
Hydrogen produced through SMR is widely used in industries such as petroleum refining, ammonia production, and methanol production. It can also be used as a clean fuel for fuel cell vehicles and stationary power generation.

New waves of the epidemic and the overwhelming demand for oxygen in the healthcare sector have led to a scarcity of the product worldwide. Countries with severe shortages are diverting oxygen from the sectors of metallurgy and chemistry to healthcare, which reduces the productivity of the manufacturing industries. As the pandemic slows, the demand for medical oxygen will return to pre-crisis levels. In the post-pandemic period, the growing demand from the metallurgical and chemical industries will continue to shape market expansion. Decarbonization may emerge as a new market driver, with oxygen being used to produce synthesis gas from carbon dioxide.
