Hydrogen oil refining, also known as hydrodesulfurization (HDS), is a critical process in the petroleum industry that involves the removal of sulfur from hydrocarbon fuels. Sulfur is a naturally occurring impurity found in crude oil, and its presence in fuels contributes to environmental pollution and damage to engines and emission control systems.
The HDS process utilizes hydrogen gas to catalytically react with sulfur compounds in the feedstock, converting them into hydrogen sulfide (H2S) gas. H2S is then separated and further processed to produce elemental sulfur or sulfuric acid. This hydrogenation process plays an essential role in meeting fuel quality standards and reducing the environmental impact of petroleum-based products.
Hydrogen oil refining typically involves the following steps:
- Pre-treatment: The feedstock oil is pretreated to remove any contaminants, such as water, solids, and heavy metals.
- Hydrogenation: The pretreated oil is mixed with hydrogen gas and passed over a catalyst bed, where the sulfur compounds react with hydrogen to form H2S gas.
- Separation: The H2S gas is separated from the hydrogenated oil using various separation techniques, such as distillation or absorption.
- Sulfur recovery: The separated H2S gas can be processed further to recover elemental sulfur or converted into valuable sulfuric acid.
- Product finishing: The hydrogenated oil is further treated to improve its quality and remove any remaining impurities, ensuring compliance with fuel standards.
The effectiveness of hydrogen oil refining depends on several factors, including the catalyst used, reaction temperature and pressure, and the composition of sulfur compounds in the feedstock. Catalysts, typically composed of metals such as molybdenum or cobalt, facilitate the sulfur-hydrogen reaction and determine the selectivity and efficiency of the process.
Hydrogen oil refining has become increasingly important due to stricter environmental regulations and the demand for cleaner fuels. In addition to sulfur removal, this process also helps to reduce other impurities and improve fuel performance. The use of hydrogen gas in refining processes aligns with the transition towards a low-carbon economy and the development of sustainable energy solutions.

New waves of the epidemic and the overwhelming demand for oxygen in the healthcare sector have led to a scarcity of the product worldwide. Countries with severe shortages are diverting oxygen from the sectors of metallurgy and chemistry to healthcare, which reduces the productivity of the manufacturing industries. As the pandemic slows, the demand for medical oxygen will return to pre-crisis levels. In the post-pandemic period, the growing demand from the metallurgical and chemical industries will continue to shape market expansion. Decarbonization may emerge as a new market driver, with oxygen being used to produce synthesis gas from carbon dioxide.
