Hydrogen electrolyser cost refers to the price associated with the technology used to produce hydrogen gas through the process of electrolysis. Electrolysis is a method that uses an electric current to split water molecules (H2O) into hydrogen (H2) and oxygen (O2) gases. The cost of hydrogen electrolysis is determined by various factors, including the size and efficiency of the electrolyser, the materials used, and the overall system design.
One of the major factors affecting the cost of hydrogen electrolysis is the efficiency of the electrolysis process. Higher efficiency electrolysis systems consume less electricity, resulting in lower operating costs. Modern electrolysis systems can achieve efficiencies of up to 80-90%, which significantly reduces the cost of hydrogen production.
The type and size of the electrolyser also play a crucial role in determining the cost. Different electrolyser technologies, such as proton exchange membrane (PEM), alkaline, and solid oxide electrolysis cells, have different costs associated with them. PEM electrolysis systems are generally more expensive due to the use of expensive materials, such as platinum group metals, in the catalyst layers. However, they offer advantages such as high efficiency and rapid response times. Alkaline electrolysis systems are relatively cheaper, but they have lower efficiency and slower response times compared to PEM systems. Solid oxide electrolysis cells are typically used in high-temperature applications and have their own cost considerations.
The overall size and scale of the electrolysis system also impact the cost. Larger-scale systems tend to have economies of scale, resulting in lower costs per unit of hydrogen produced. Additionally, the capital costs associated with the construction and installation of the electrolysis plant need to be considered.
Another important factor in determining the cost of hydrogen electrolysis is the electricity price. The cost of electricity used in the electrolysis process can significantly affect the overall cost of hydrogen production. Renewable energy sources, such as wind and solar, are becoming increasingly popular for hydrogen production as they offer lower electricity costs and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Research and development efforts are focused on reducing the cost of hydrogen electrolysis by improving the efficiency of electrolysis systems, exploring new catalyst materials, and optimizing system designs. As advancements in technology continue to drive down costs, hydrogen generated through electrolysis is becoming more competitive with other sources of hydrogen, such as steam methane reforming.

New waves of the epidemic and the overwhelming demand for oxygen in the healthcare sector have led to a scarcity of the product worldwide. Countries with severe shortages are diverting oxygen from the sectors of metallurgy and chemistry to healthcare, which reduces the productivity of the manufacturing industries. As the pandemic slows, the demand for medical oxygen will return to pre-crisis levels. In the post-pandemic period, the growing demand from the metallurgical and chemical industries will continue to shape market expansion. Decarbonization may emerge as a new market driver, with oxygen being used to produce synthesis gas from carbon dioxide.
