Ginger Price in Japan (CIF) - 2023
The average ginger import price stood at $2,567 per ton in July 2023, picking up by 25% against the previous month. Over the last twelve-month period, it increased at an average monthly rate of +2.5%. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Taiwan (Chinese) ($3,376 per ton), while the price for Thailand ($1,350 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+2.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
Ginger Price in Japan (FOB) - 2022
The average ginger export price stood at $6,942 per ton in 2022, waning by -52.7% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a noticeable shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the average export price increased by 33% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure at $14,673 per ton in 2021, and then dropped sharply in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was China ($15,146 per ton), while the average price for exports to Norway ($2,105 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Vietnam (+0.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.
Ginger Imports in Japan
In 2022, overseas purchases of ginger were finally on the rise to reach 62K tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a slight setback.
In value terms, ginger imports dropped to $112M in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the period from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 13% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $121M, and then reduced in the following year.

Ginger Exports in Japan
In 2022, overseas shipments of ginger were finally on the rise to reach 31 tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, total exports indicated a strong expansion from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +10.9% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, ginger exports declined markedly to $215K in 2022. In general, exports, however, saw a deep setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 4.7%.
