Coconut Oil Price in South Africa (CIF) - 2022

The average coconut oil import price stood at $2,206 per ton in 2022, surging by 24% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import price indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, coconut oil import price increased by +105.1% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the average import price increased by 48%. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Malaysia ($2,689 per ton), while the price for Mozambique ($1,623 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Indonesia (+7.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

Coconut Oil Price in South Africa (FOB) - 2022

The average coconut oil export price stood at $3,060 per ton in 2022, with an increase of 11% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 an increase of 39%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $4,593 per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the countries with the highest prices were Zambia ($3,836 per ton) and Lesotho ($3,708 per ton), while the average price for exports to Mozambique ($2,858 per ton) and Botswana ($2,907 per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Namibia (+8.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Coconut Oil Imports in South Africa

In 2022, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas purchases of coconut (copra) oil, when their volume increased by 32% to 6.3K tons. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% over the period from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, coconut oil imports soared to $14M in 2022. Overall, imports enjoyed significant growth. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

For the third consecutive year, South Africa recorded decline in shipments abroad of coconut (copra) oil, which decreased by -5% to 156 tons in 2022. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a abrupt curtailment. The smallest decline of -4.3% was in 2021.

In value terms, coconut oil exports expanded sharply to $479K in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the period from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 14%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.
