Global palm kernel oil consumption amounted to 6,906 thousand tonnes in 2015, surging by +4.6% against the previous year level. Overall, the global palm kernel oil consumption indicated a pronounced growth from 2007 to 2015. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The total consumption volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.3%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2008, when the output figure increased by +9% from the previous year level. Over the period under review, the global palm kernel oil consumption reached its maximum volume in 2015, and is likely to continue its growth in the immediate term.

Global Palm Kernel Oil Consumption

In 2015, the countries with the highest consumption were Indonesia (3,516 thousand tonnes), Malaysia (2,350 thousand tonnes), Thailand (177 thousand tonnes), together comprising 87% of total consumption. They were followed by Brazil with a 2% of global consumption share and Nigeria with a 2% share.

From 2007 to 2015, the most notable growth rates of palm kernel oil consumption among the main consuming countries was attained by Indonesia (+8.6% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The highest levels of palm kernel and babassu oil per capita consumption was registered in Malaysia (77.49 kg/year), followed by Indonesia (13.65 kg/year), Thailand (2.60 kg/year), Brazil (0.64 kg/year) and Nigeria (0.64 kg/year), while the average per capita consumption of palm kernel and babassu oil was estimated at 2.35 kg/year in 2015.

In Indonesia, per capita palm kernel and babassu oil consumption has grown noticably (+7.2% per year) in recent years. In 2015, Indonesia per capita consumption reached 77.49 kg/year as compared with 7.84 kg/year in 2007.
