Cocoa Butter Price in South Africa (CIF) - 2023

In September 2023, the average cocoa butter import price amounted to $5,487 per ton, growing by 14% against the previous month. Over the last twelve-month period, it increased at an average monthly rate of +2.6%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in April 2023 when the average import price increased by 33% against the previous month. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure at $5,628 per ton in June 2023; however, from July 2023 to September 2023, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In September 2023, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($6,330 per ton), while the price for Indonesia ($4,491 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Singapore (+4.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

Cocoa Butter Price in South Africa (FOB) - 2022

In 2022, the average cocoa butter export price amounted to $5,609 per ton, falling by -14.8% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a pronounced descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 an increase of 655% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $40,611 per ton. From 2017 to 2022, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Mozambique ($10,339 per ton), while the average price for exports to Swaziland ($1,172 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the United Arab Emirates (+5.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Cocoa Butter Imports in South Africa

In 2022, the amount of cocoa butter imported into South Africa rose significantly to 3.9K tons, surging by 8.4% compared with the previous year. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% over the period from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed in certain years. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, cocoa butter imports shrank to $17M in 2022. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a pronounced decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 13%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $21M. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, overseas shipments of cocoa butter decreased by -29.1% to 11 tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. In general, exports faced a sharp curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when exports increased by 16%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of 27 tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, cocoa butter exports contracted significantly to $63K in 2022. Over the period under review, exports showed a sharp shrinkage. The smallest decline of -14.5% was in 2020.
