Chocolate Price in Hungary (CIF) - 2023
The average chocolate import price stood at $5,228 per ton in June 2023, falling by -1.9% against the previous month. In general, import price indicated a temperate expansion from June 2022 to June 2023: its price increased at an average monthly rate of +2.8% over the last twelve months. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on June 2023 figures, chocolate import price decreased by -20.5% against March 2023 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in March 2023 an increase of 25% against the previous month. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $6,572 per ton. From April 2023 to June 2023, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In June 2023, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($7,472 per ton), while the price for Slovakia ($3,901 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From June 2022 to June 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+6.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Chocolate Price in Hungary (FOB) - 2023
In June 2023, the average chocolate export price amounted to $7,110 per ton, with an increase of 2% against the previous month. In general, export price indicated a tangible expansion from June 2022 to June 2023: its price increased at an average monthly rate of +3.6% over the last twelve-month period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on June 2023 figures, chocolate export price increased by +12.2% against March 2023 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in December 2022 an increase of 12% m-o-m. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum in June 2023.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In June 2023, the country with the highest price was Slovakia ($16,529 per ton), while the average price for exports to Lithuania ($3,795 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From June 2022 to June 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Slovakia (+8.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Chocolate Imports in Hungary
In 2022, approx. 81K tons of chocolate and cocoa products were imported into Hungary; with an increase of 6.7% on 2021 figures. Overall, imports showed a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 220% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.
In value terms, chocolate imports totaled $338M in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the period from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 11%. Imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Chocolate Exports in Hungary
For the fourth consecutive year, Hungary recorded growth in shipments abroad of chocolate and cocoa products, which increased by 14% to 56K tons in 2022. In general, exports posted a significant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when exports increased by 278%. The exports peaked in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.
In value terms, chocolate exports rose markedly to $276M in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +10.3% from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 15%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.
