Cinnamon Price in Sri Lanka (FOB) - 2022

The average cinnamon export price stood at $12,678 per ton in 2022, falling by -3.6% against the previous year. In general, export price indicated a tangible increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, cinnamon export price increased by +120.4% against 2018 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 78%. The export price peaked at $13,150 per ton in 2021, and then fell in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Spain ($14,578 per ton), while the average price for exports to India ($7,506 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Germany (+6.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Cinnamon Price in Sri Lanka (CIF) - 2022

In 2022, the average cinnamon import price amounted to $9,323 per ton, waning by -30.5% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, enjoyed a slight increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the average import price increased by 64% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $13,776 per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Indonesia ($18,000 per ton), while the price for Madagascar ($3,000 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Honduras (+14.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

Cinnamon Exports in Sri Lanka

In 2022, overseas shipments of cinnamon (canella) decreased by -2.6% to 18K tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the period from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 14%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of 20K tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, cinnamon exports shrank to $232M in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +9.7% from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 23% against the previous year.

Cinnamon Imports in Sri Lanka

For the third consecutive year, Sri Lanka recorded decline in supplies from abroad of cinnamon (canella), which decreased by -73.1% to 18 tons in 2022. Over the period under review, imports showed a sharp slump. The smallest decline of -19.1% was in 2021.

In value terms, cinnamon imports fell markedly to $170K in 2022. Overall, imports showed a dramatic slump. The smallest decline of -20.5% was in 2020.
