Which Country Consumes the Most Cinnamon in the World?

Global cinnamon consumption amounted to 62 thousand tonnes in 2015, picking up by +11.1% against the previous year level. Overall, the global cinnamon consumption indicated a pronounced growth from 2007 to 2015. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The total consumption volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.6%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2008, when the output figure increased by +59% from the previous year level. In that year, the global cinnamon consumption attained its maximum volume of 87 thousand tonnes. From 2009 to 2015, the total cinnamon consumption growth failed to regain its strength.

Global Cinnamon Consumption

In 2015, the countries with the highest consumption were Indonesia (93 thousand tonnes), China (72 thousand tonnes), Viet Nam (34 thousand tonnes), together comprising 91% of total consumption. They were followed by Sri Lanka with a 8% of global consumption share and Madagascar with a 1% share.

From 2007 to 2015, the most notable growth rates of cinnamon consumption among the main consuming countries was attained by Viet Nam (+8.2% per year), while the other global leaders experienced mixed trends in the consumption figures.

The highest levels of cinnamon (canella) per capita consumption was registered in Sri Lanka (0.82 kg/year), followed by Viet Nam (0.36 kg/year), Indonesia (0.36 kg/year), Madagascar (0.10 kg/year) and China (0.05 kg/year), while the average per capita consumption of cinnamon (canella) was estimated at 0.33 kg/year in 2015.

In Viet Nam, per capita cinnamon (canella) consumption has grown noticably (+7.1% per year) in recent years. In 2015, Viet Nam per capita consumption reached 0.82 kg/year as compared with 0.21 kg/year in 2007.
