Chocolate and Confectionery Price in South Africa (CIF) - 2022

In 2022, the average chocolate and confectionery import price amounted to $3,433 per ton, which is down by -2.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed a perceptible shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the average import price increased by 9.6% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $4,293 per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($6,206 per ton), while the price for Turkey ($464 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Colombia (+2.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

Chocolate and Confectionery Price in South Africa (FOB) - 2023

In July 2023, the average chocolate and confectionery export price amounted to $4,688 per ton, waning by -15.8% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in February 2023 an increase of 36% m-o-m. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $6,758 per ton. From March 2023 to July 2023, the the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was Taiwan (Chinese) ($10,106 per ton), while the average price for exports to Swaziland ($2,500 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the United States (+1.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Chocolate and Confectionery Imports in South Africa

In 2022, approx. 49K tons of chocolate and confectionery were imported into South Africa; falling by -2.6% against the previous year. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the period from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 16%. As a result, imports reached the peak of 51K tons, and then declined slightly in the following year.

In value terms, chocolate and confectionery imports reduced to $169M in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the period from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 9.9%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $178M, and then contracted in the following year.

The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.1% from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 9.9%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, chocolate and confectionery exports expanded significantly to $89M in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +6.8% from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 15% against the previous year. The exports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
