Cereal Price in the United States (FOB) - 2022

The average cereal export price stood at $348 per ton in 2022, picking up by 23% against the previous year. Overall, export price indicated mild growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, cereal export price increased by +76.7% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 an increase of 37% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.

Average prices varied somewhat for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the countries with the highest prices were Nigeria ($408 per ton) and the Philippines ($407 per ton), while the average price for exports to Canada ($304 per ton) and Guatemala ($328 per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to South Korea (+2.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Cereal Price in the United States (CIF) - 2022

In 2022, the average cereal import price amounted to $449 per ton, surging by 31% against the previous year. In general, import price indicated a slight increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, cereal import price increased by +56.9% against 2016 indices. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the highest price was recorded for prices from Canada ($413 per ton) and Argentina ($402 per ton), while the price for Germany ($310 per ton) and Brazil ($381 per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Canada (+2.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

Cereal Exports in the United States

In 2022, shipments abroad of cereals decreased by -15.3% to 86M tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.5% from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 18%.

In value terms, cereal exports rose to $30B in 2022. In general, exports, however, posted a significant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 61% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Cereal Imports in the United States

In 2022, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in purchases abroad of cereals, when their volume increased by 8.5% to 4.4M tons. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a perceptible shrinkage.

In value terms, cereal imports skyrocketed to $2B in 2022. In general, total imports indicated a remarkable increase from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +10.3% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
