In Apr 2022, the wheat price per ton stood at $265 (FOB, US), increasing by 31% against the previous month. Over the period from Jan 2022 to Apr 2022, it increased at an average monthly rate of +9.7%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was Egypt ($616 per ton), while the average price for exports to Japan ($60 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From Jan 2022 to Apr 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Indonesia, while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth
U.S. Wheat Exports
Wheat exports from the United States contracted to 2.8M tons in Apr 2022, reducing by -13% on the previous month's figure. Over the period under review, exports showed a noticeable contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in Mar 2022 with an increase of 4.8% m-o-m. As a result, the exports reached the peak of 3.3M tons, and then shrank in the following month.
In value terms, wheat exports stood at $751M (IndexBox estimates) in Apr 2022. The total export value increased at an average monthly rate of +4.8% over the period from Jan 2022 to Apr 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being recorded in certain months. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
U.S. Wheat Exports by Country
Japan (829K tons) was the main destination for wheat exports from the United States, accounting for a 29% share of total exports. Moreover, wheat exports to Japan exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, South Korea (414K tons), twofold. Mexico (344K tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 12% share.
From Jan 2022 to Apr 2022, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of volume to Japan stood at +4.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average monthly rates of exports growth: South Korea (+70.5% per month) and Mexico (+8.7% per month).
In value terms, the largest markets for wheat exported from the United States were Mexico ($139M), the Philippines ($76M) and Egypt ($66M), with a combined 38% share of total exports. El Salvador, Japan, South Korea, Colombia, Taiwan (Chinese), Thailand, Nigeria, Indonesia, Peru and Italy lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 44%.
Among the main countries of destination, Italy, with a CAGR of +80.2%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
