Canned Food Price in New Zealand (FOB) - 2023

In September 2023, the average canned food export price amounted to $10,844 per ton, with an increase of 7.6% against the previous month. Over the last twelve-month period, it increased at an average monthly rate of +2.7%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in May 2023 when the average export price increased by 31% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure in September 2023.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was China ($17,282 per ton), while the average price for exports to Fiji ($3,869 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Fiji (+4.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Canned Food Price in New Zealand (CIF) - 2023

The average canned food import price stood at $2,747 per ton in September 2023, growing by 4.9% against the previous month. In general, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in November 2022 an increase of 14% against the previous month. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum at $3,379 per ton in February 2023; however, from March 2023 to September 2023, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Malaysia ($10,467 per ton), while the price for Italy ($1,389 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Spain (+3.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

Canned Food Exports in New Zealand

In 2022, shipments abroad of canned food was finally on the rise to reach 233K tons after two years of decline. In general, total exports indicated a notable increase from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, canned food exports surged to $2B in 2022. Overall, total exports indicated a buoyant increase from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +13.7% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
