Which Country Exports the Most Homogenized Composite Food Preparations in the World?

Global canned food exports totaled 1.2M tonnes in 2016, jumping by 9% against the previous year figure. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% over the period from 2007 to 2016; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016, when export increased by 9% year-to-year. In that year, global canned food exports reached its maximum volume, and are likely to continue its growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, canned food exports totaled $2.8B in 2016. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% from 2007 to 2016; however, the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. Global canned food export peaked of $3.2B in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2016, it stood at a somewhat lower level.

Canned Food Exports By Country

The exports of the three major exporters of canned food, namely the U.S., South Africa, and Canada, represented more than third of total export. Spain (66K tonnes) ranks second globally in canned food exports with a 5% share, following Senegal (5%), Germany (5%), and Poland (5%). The following exporters - France (47K tonnes), Guatemala (42K tonnes), Italy (40K tonnes), the Netherlands (40K tonnes), and Thailand (26K tonnes) together made up 16% of total exports.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of canned food exports, among the main exporting countries, was attained by South Africa (+29.6% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the U.S. ($457M) remains the largest canned food supplier in the world, making up 16% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by Germany ($205M), with the share of 7% of global exports. It was followed by Canada, with the share of 6%.

From 2007 to 2016, the average annual growth rate of value of canned food exports in the U.S. stood at +4.1%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates: Germany (-3.3% per year) and Canada (+0.4% per year).

Canned Food Export Prices By Country

The average canned food export price stood at $2,284 per tonne in 2016, dropping by -10.1% against the previous year. Overall, canned food export price continues to indicate a slight slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2008, when it surged by 15% from the previous year level. In that year, average canned food export price reached its maximum level of $2,991 per tonne. From 2009 to 2016, growth of average canned food export price failed to regain its strength.

There were significant differences in the average export prices amongst major exporting countries. In 2016, the country with the highest export prices was the Netherlands ($3,534 per tonne), while South Africa ($341 per tonne) was among the lowest.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of canned food export prices was attained by the Netherlands (+6.5% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
