Beef Price in Australia (FOB) - 2023

In July 2023, the average beef export price amounted to $6,713 per ton, flattening at the previous month. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a mild downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in April 2023 when the average export price increased by 7% month-to-month. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $7,728 per ton in July 2022; however, from August 2022 to July 2023, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In July 2023, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($12,045 per ton), while the average price for exports to the Philippines ($3,431 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Vietnam (+7.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Beef Price in Australia (CIF) - 2023

In July 2023, the average beef import price amounted to $9,084 per ton, picking up by 26% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in February 2023 an increase of 62% m-o-m. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $11,652 per ton. From March 2023 to July 2023, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In July 2023, the country with the highest price was Japan ($61,983 per ton), while the price for New Zealand stood at $6,978 per ton.

From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Japan (+6.0%).

Beef Exports in Australia

For the third year in a row, Australia recorded decline in overseas shipments of beef (cattle meat), which decreased by -4.2% to 932K tons in 2022. Over the period under review, exports showed a drastic downturn.

In value terms, beef exports rose to $7.2B in 2022. In general, exports showed a mild slump.

Beef Imports in Australia

In 2022, supplies from abroad of beef (cattle meat) decreased by -5.7% to 5.4K tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. In general, imports, however, posted significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 230% against the previous year.

In value terms, beef imports declined modestly to $37M in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a significant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 184%.
