Which Country Consumes the Most Beef in the World?

Global beef consumption amounted to 64,924 thousand tonnes in 2015, standing approx. at the previous year level. Overall, the global beef consumption indicated a moderate growth from 2007 to 2015. The trend pattern, however, remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The total consumption volume increased at an average annual rate of +0.5%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013, when the output figure increased by +2% from the previous year level. Over the period under review, the global beef consumption reached its maximum volume in 2015, and is likely to continue its growth in the immediate term.

Global Beef Consumption

In 2015, the countries with the highest consumption were the United States (11,304 thousand tonnes), Brazil (9,979 thousand tonnes), China (6,788 thousand tonnes), together comprising 43% of total consumption. They were followed by Argentina with a 4% of global consumption share and Australia with a 4% share.

From 2007 to 2015, the most notable growth rates of beef consumption among the main consuming countries was attained by China (+1.9% per year), while the other global leaders experienced mixed trends in the consumption figures.

The highest levels of beef (cattle meat) per capita consumption was registered in Australia (112.75 kg/year), followed by Argentina (63.91 kg/year), Brazil (48.01 kg/year), the United States (35.13 kg/year) and China (4.82 kg/year), while the average per capita consumption of beef (cattle meat) was estimated at 10.23 kg/year in 2015.

In China, per capita beef (cattle meat) consumption has grown modestly (+1.4% per year) in recent years. In 2015, China per capita consumption reached 112.75 kg/year as compared with 4.33 kg/year in 2007.
